State Road 39State Road 39 is a discontinuous route that currently has two sections. The northern section is a fairly long north-south road that fits well in the Indiana grid system, but is not too major in most areas despite its length. Furthermore significant portions of this section are multiplexed. At first, Indiana 39 only made it as far north as Monticello, with Indiana 119 going south to meet it there. However, in the 1940s and 1950s the road was extended: first in sections (SR 14 to Lake Hudson and La Porte to the Michigan line) then, by 1958, as a signed road for the entire distance. In the 1930s, this same section was supposed to be extended south of Martinsville to SR 45 near Bloomington (see map link below). This was never built. Another section of SR 39 currently exists connecting SR 250 with SR 56 west of Scottsburg and Seymour. This section is low volume and manages to avoid any cities. Although from looking at a map it may seem like the terminus should be at US 50 in Brownstown instead, SR 250 is an older road than SR 39 here, so SR 250 is the posted designation. In the 1940s, the southern stretch of current SR 160 (between Henryville and Charlestown) was also signed SR 39. It is not known whether or not the original intent was to have an SR 39 route from Michigan to Kentucky. |
