US 40US 40 in Indiana runs mostly the original National Road, one of the first federally funded travel routes west of the Alleghenies. The route was originally given the number "3" by the state of Indiana before the creation of the "US" road signing system, but in 1926 it was designated US 40. This road has since largely been bypassed by Interstate 70. Still, it's considered important enough that it's been built as 4 lane divided outside the cities on its route, though much of this existed before the Interstate System was built.Around Indianapolis, US 40 follows the south half of I-465 as part of the super-multiplex. The only other freeway part of US 40 is west of Terre Haute where it multiplexes with I-70 into Illinois. In Brazil, the original National Road follws SR 340 rather than US 40 for a short distance. |
