I-70

Interstate 70 I-70 is a major highway through Indiana that follows an east-west route through the center of the state. Except for the Indianapolis, it is still only four lanes although long range plans call for making it six lanes across the state. Through the entire state, it is a heavily traveled road. It was finally completed in Indiana in 1976 when a stretch in Indianapolis was opened. The most impressive portion is the section rebuilt in 2003 at the new Indianapolis Airport terminal area west of I-465 where it is ten lanes in some areas. I-70 took over trunk line status from, US 40, commonly known as the National road. The National Road was one of the first highways the Government built. Except for local traffic in cities, US 40 is relegated to a secondary route as I-70 carries the lion's share despite most of US 40 being a divided highway. I-70 connects the Baltimore-Washington area and Utah passing through Columbus, Ohio, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Denver. In Indiana, it connects Richmond, Indianapolis and Terre Haute.
