Interstate 465I-465 runs around the city of Indianapolis in a full circle. For the entire distance, it is either three to four lanes each direction, and it serves as both the detour for construction around town and the route for through hazardous materials. In more recent years, all non-Interstate routes multiplex with I-465 instead of going through the city. While the idea may have some merit, it has at least two major problems: 1) there is no route into Indianapolis proper from I-65 in the northwest to I-70 in the east (thus no north or northwest highways from downtown), and 2) the routes are not even signed along the part they share with I-465 (causes confusion).For many years, there was a branch off the main circle that was only designated TO I-465 (eastbound) and TO I-65 westbound. That was an original part of the interstate. Thirty-two years passed before the situation was fixed (in the form of I-865 in the northwest corner). The part of I-465 that ran between exits 20 and 25 was first known as Indiana SR 100. I-465 superceded this designation over time until the last part of SR 100 disappeared in the early 1990s. Construction of I-465 occurred between 1959 and 1970. The first section opened in 1961 and the final section opened in 1970.
